How to use it
- Take your hand off the mouse or controller and look away from the game.
- Find each thing for real: look, touch, listen. Press Got one for each (or Enter). Typing what you noticed is optional, and nothing you type is stored.
- Work down from 5 things you see to 1 thing you taste. Skip a sense if it isn't working.
- Finish with one slow breath out.
Why it works
The 5-4-3-2-1 exercise walks you through your senses to bring your attention back to the room you're actually in. Counselling services recommend it for anxious or overwhelmed moments (University of Rochester Medical Center).
To be straight with you: it's a widely used coping exercise, not something proven in trials. It's simple, free and takes two minutes, so it's worth finding out whether it works for you.
When to use it
- After a bad loss, when your heart is pounding and you want to queue again right away.
- After a big win, when you're too wired to stop or to sleep.
- When a horror game or an intense clutch leaves you jumpy.
